The AI era's biggest company is now run by the person who made the metal

The prevailing story about technology this decade is that the value moved to software, and then to models. Apple has just handed itself to the person in charge of the objects.
The appointment
John Ternus became Apple's chief executive on 1 September 2026, succeeding Tim Cook, who became executive chairman after fifteen years. Ternus joined in 2001 and was senior vice president of Hardware Engineering — iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, AirPods. Twenty-five years, all of them on the manufactured side.
Why that is a real choice and not a formality
Whoever runs a device company at this point inherits a specific tension. The interesting capabilities arrive as models, the models want compute, and compute is a physical object with a thermal budget, a battery behind it and a price that has to survive a retail shelf.
The two halves are usually managed by different people who disagree. Putting the hardware side in charge is a statement about which constraint is treated as fixed — and in a device you can hold, the physics is the constraint that does not negotiate.
The scale it applies to
More than 2.5 billion active devices across 200-plus countries and territories. A design decision at Apple is not a product decision; it is an infrastructure decision that arrives in two billion pockets and stays there for years. That is the argument for an engineer, and equally the argument against one: infrastructure thinking is excellent at not breaking things and historically poor at abandoning them.
The measure that will not repeat
Cook's tenure ran from a market value of roughly $350 billion to about $4 trillion, with revenue from $108 billion in FY2011 to $416 billion in FY2025 and a services business that passed $100 billion on its own. No successor repeats a multiple like that; there is not enough room left.
Which makes this the more interesting kind of appointment to follow. The last fifteen years had an obvious scoreboard. The next fifteen will be judged on whether the objects stay worth having when the intelligence in them no longer lives on the device at all.
The signal to watch is not a keynote. It is where the computation sits: each generation of device that keeps more of the model running locally is a hardware-first answer, and each one that pushes more of it to a data centre is the opposite. That choice is visible in ordinary specifications — memory on the chip, battery life under load — long before anyone states it as a strategy.

On 31 August the European Commission designated ChatGPT a very large online search engine under the Digital Services Act. The classification says more about how systems get governed than about the product.

Two questions, one trial
A Nature Biotechnology paper proposes measuring biological age inside ordinary disease trials, using blood already drawn, and sets out what regulators would need first.
