IFA opens in Berlin with 1,900 brands from 49 countries

While the technology conversation has moved almost entirely to models and data centres, one of Europe's largest technology events remains stubbornly about objects.
The event
IFA runs 4–8 September 2026 at Messe Berlin, with more than 1,900 brands from 49 countries and visitors from around 140 countries.
What a hardware show is for now
There is a reasonable case that a consumer electronics exhibition is an anachronism. Products launch by video, reviews arrive before shipping, and nothing on a show floor is secret by the time the doors open.
The counter-argument is the one that has kept IFA alive: appliances and consumer hardware are still bought by people who want to open the door, turn the dial and hear the noise it makes. That is not a product-launch function, it is a supply-chain function — retail buyers, distributors and regional importers making decisions that video cannot support.
Why 49 countries is the number that matters
Not 1,900 brands — brand counts inflate easily. Forty-nine countries of origin against visitors from 140 is a trade ratio, and it describes what the floor is actually doing: matching manufacturers concentrated in a few places against buyers spread across most of the world.
It is also the clearest reason a European show survives in a category dominated by Asian manufacturing. Berlin is not where the goods are made; it is where the people who decide what Europe stocks can all be met in one week.
For anyone tracking where domestic AI actually lands, a show like this is more informative than a keynote. The claim to test on the floor is whether a feature runs on the device or calls a server: an appliance that keeps working with the network unplugged has made an engineering commitment, and one that does not has made a subscription.
