Step is Dubai's home-grown start-up conference, running since 2012, and the one where the region's founders rather than its ministers fill the floor. Step Dubai 2027 is on 3–4 February at Dubai Internet City.
The programme
A Main Stage of founder and investor talks, a Startup Showcase for early-stage companies exhibiting, a pitch competition, and investor meetings the organiser arranges between funds and start-ups attending. Side tracks have in past years covered fintech, digital media, and the creator economy.
Passes
On sale at stepconference.com, in tiers for attendees, start-ups and investors; the start-up tier includes a showcase stand.
The week
Step opens the day Web Summit Qatar closes in Doha, which the organiser is unlikely to have arranged by accident; the two together make the Gulf's start-up week.
Step is the conference at which to meet the region's angels and seed funds, who are mostly Dubai-based and mostly here, rather than the sovereign money, which is in Doha. For a founder at pre-seed the showcase stand is a better buy than a Web Summit booth, because the people walking past are the people who write cheques of that size. The pitch competition's real prize is the investor meetings that follow it, not the cash.
